All Hurdles Cleared for Vijay as VCK, IUML Extend Outside Support to TVK

VCK and IUML have reportedly extended outside support to Vijay-led TVK, significantly strengthening the party’s numbers and bringing Vijay closer to becoming the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai: In a major boost to Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have reportedly decided to extend outside support to the party for government formation in Tamil Nadu.

The latest developments have considerably strengthened TVK’s position in the post-election numbers game following the fractured mandate in the Assembly elections.

TVK had emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, but remained short of the majority mark of 118. Congress had earlier announced support to TVK with its five MLAs. VCK, which secured two seats, and IUML, which won one seat in the elections, have now reportedly extended support from outside, further boosting Vijay’s numbers.

Meanwhile, the CPI and CPI(M), which won two seats each, are also believed to be moving closer towards supporting TVK after holding crucial State secretariat meetings in Chennai on Friday.

Political observers believe the combined backing from Congress, VCK, IUML and the Left parties could comfortably push TVK past the majority mark required to form the government.

Sources said the Governor has sought proof of majority support before inviting Vijay to stake claim to form the government. The delay had triggered protests by Congress and TVK cadres across Tamil Nadu, accusing the Governor of slowing down the government formation process despite TVK emerging as the single largest party.

Speculation over possible political realignments involving the DMK and AIADMK had further intensified political uncertainty in the State over the past few days.

However, with VCK and IUML now extending outside support and the Left parties also expected to back TVK, Vijay appears closer than ever to taking oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
