Southwest Monsoon: Valparai Continues Wet Spell; Pilloor Catchment Receives Much-Needed Rain

Valparai continued to receive widespread rainfall, while Pilloor catchment recorded an encouraging spell of rain. However, Siruvani received only light showers, raising concerns over Coimbatore's drinking water catchment.

Coimbatore: Valparai continued to dominate the rainfall chart in Coimbatore district, recording the highest precipitation for yet another day, even as the district's major drinking water catchments presented a mixed picture.

According to the District Disaster Management rainfall report for the 24-hour period ending at 7.30 a.m. on Friday, Sholayar recorded the highest rainfall at 46 mm, followed by Chinnakallar (42 mm), Valparai PAP (32 mm), Cinchona (32 mm) and Valparai Taluk (30 mm). The hill region has been witnessing consistent rainfall over the past few days, with precipitation steadily increasing across most observation stations.

Among Coimbatore's key drinking water sources, the Pilloor catchment received a welcome spell of rainfall, with Pilloor Dam recording 16 mm and Mettupalayam receiving 17 mm. The fresh showers mark a significant improvement compared to the sparse rainfall witnessed in the catchment over the past week and are expected to provide some relief to the reservoir, one of the city's primary drinking water sources.

In contrast, Siruvani, Coimbatore's other crucial drinking water catchment, recorded only 2 mm of rainfall, extending a spell of very light or negligible showers over the past several days. The lack of substantial rainfall in the Siruvani catchment continues to remain a concern as the southwest monsoon has remained relatively subdued across the city and adjoining plains.

While Coimbatore city recorded little to no rainfall at most observation stations, residents and farmers remain hopeful that widespread monsoon showers over the Siruvani and Pilloor catchments in the coming days will help replenish reservoirs, strengthen drinking water reserves and support agricultural needs until the onset of the next rainy season.

Overall, Coimbatore district recorded a cumulative rainfall of 237 mm, with an average rainfall of 10.30 mm during the 24-hour period, placing it under the light rainfall category.
