Woman Attempts Self-Immolation Outside Coimbatore Collectorate; Rescued by Police

A woman allegedly attempted self-immolation outside the Coimbatore District Collectorate, claiming that police had failed to act on her complaint against her husband, whom she accused of deceiving her and getting engaged to another woman.

Coimbatore: Tension prevailed at the Coimbatore District Collectorate on Monday after a woman allegedly attempted self-immolation during the weekly public grievance meeting.

Police personnel on duty immediately intervened, prevented the attempt, seized the kerosene can and rescued her safely.

The woman, a native of Thanjavur, had come to the Collectorate seeking justice, alleging that her husband had betrayed their eight-year marriage by getting engaged to another woman. She further alleged that he had been in a relationship with the other woman while they were living together.

She claimed that although she had lodged a complaint with the police, no action had been taken against her husband. Instead, she alleged that police officials had repeatedly asked her to sign documents and settle the dispute amicably rather than initiate legal proceedings or provide her with relief.

After being rescued by the woman cops, she told reporters that she was taking the extreme step to draw the attention of the authorities to act promptly on her complaint and similar complaints lodged by women.

She was later escorted by women police personnel for inquiry and counselling. The incident caused a brief commotion at the Collectorate premises.
