Nursing Student Killed After Tipper Lorry Hits Three Students Crossing L&T Bypass

A 21-year-old second-year nursing student was killed on the spot and two fellow students were injured after a tipper lorry, allegedly driven in a rash and negligent manner, rammed into the three students while they were crossing the L&T Bypass Road near a private nursing college in Coimbatore on Thursday.

Coimbatore: A second-year nursing student was killed and two of her classmates were injured after a tipper lorry allegedly rammed into them while they were crossing the busy L&T Bypass Road near Abirami Nursing College in Coimbatore on Wednesday afternoon. The Madukkarai Police have detained the lorry driver and registered a case.

The deceased has been identified as Anusree (21), a second-year nursing student of Abirami Nursing College and a native of Thoothukudi district.

The injured students, Dhevika (21) and Sridharani (21), were rushed to Abirami Hospital, Sundarapuram, where they are undergoing treatment. Dhevika sustained a fracture to her right thigh, while Sridharani suffered a minor abrasion on her hand and was treated for shock.

According to the police, the three students were returning to the college from their hostel after lunch and were crossing the L&T Bypass Road in front of the institution at around 1.30 p.m. when a tipper lorry, allegedly driven in a rash and negligent manner on the wrong carriageway from the Cochin side towards Salem, rammed on them.

Anusree sustained critical head injuries in the impact and succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Police said the lorry driver, Balraj (40) of Coimbatore district, allegedly attempted to flee after the accident but fell and sustained an injury to his right eye.

The Madukkarai Police have seized the tipper lorry, detained the driver, and registered a case. Further investigation is under way.
