HR&CE Probes Alleged Hundi Misappropriation at Coimbatore’s Koniamman Temple

Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HRCE) Department officials carried out a surprise inspection at the Koniamman Temple in Coimbatore following a complaint alleging the misappropriation of donations from a temporary hundi during the recent counting process.

Coimbatore: Officials from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department conducted a surprise inspection at the Arulmigu Koniamman Temple near Town Hall in Coimbatore on Friday following a complaint alleging the misappropriation of donations collected through one of the temple's hundis.

The temple, one of Coimbatore's most prominent places of worship, has nine permanent hundis and six temporary hundis. The donation boxes were opened under the supervision of the HR&CE Assistant Commissioner on July 15, following which the offerings were counted.

Subsequently, allegations surfaced that donations from one of the temporary hundis had been misappropriated with the alleged involvement of certain temple staff. A complaint in this regard was also submitted to the HR&CE Department headquarters in Chennai.

Acting on the complaint, a team of officials led by Coimbatore Regional Joint Commissioner Ramesh carried out a surprise inspection at the temple. As part of the inquiry, officials conducted checks at the temple's administrative office and examined records related to the hundi counting process.

Sources said CCTV footage recorded during the counting of donations is also being scrutinised as part of the investigation to verify the allegations.

The complaint, which relates to donations offered by devotees during the temple festival, has drawn attention among devotees. The HR&CE Department has not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations or the ongoing inquiry.
