Coimbatore District Police have detained a 24-year-old drug offender under the Goondas Act for allegedly possessing 4.5 kg of ganja for illegal sale. The detention order was issued by the Coimbatore District Collector based on the recommendation of the Superintendent of Police.
Coimbatore: Prasath (24) was arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing, Periyanaickenpalayam, in connection with a case involving the alleged possession of 4.5 kg of ganja intended for sale. He was subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
Citing his repeated involvement in drug-related offences, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan K. Reddy, IPS, recommended his detention under the Goondas Act. Acting on the recommendation, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, IAS, issued the detention order, following which Prasath was detained as a Drug Offender.
The district police said stringent action under the Goondas Act would be taken against those involved in activities that pose a threat to public order or public health.
The police have also urged the public to report information about persons involved in drug-related offences through “Nizhal”, a QR code-based platform that allows confidential reporting without disclosing the informant’s identity. Information can also be shared with the Coimbatore District Police Control Room at 94981 81212 or via WhatsApp at 77081 00100. The police said the identity and details of informants would be kept strictly confidential.
