Coimbatore Collector Inspects Onion Sales at Ration Shops

To control rising onion prices in Coimbatore, the Tamil Nadu government has started selling onions at Rs 35 per kg through fair price shops. District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar conducted a direct inspection at a ration shop in Masakalipalayam area, monitored onion distribution, and provided guidelines to officials.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government has implemented a scheme to sell onions at Rs 35 per kg through fair price shops starting today, aimed at controlling the surge in onion prices. Under this scheme, onion sales have commenced at 661 fair price shops across Coimbatore city.

In the first phase, this sale is being conducted at ration shops in urban areas. One kilogram of onion is being provided per ration card. Since morning, people have been visiting the shops, paying Rs 35, and purchasing onions.

In this context, District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar conducted a direct inspection of the scheme's implementation. He personally visited a fair price shop located in the Masakalipalayam area and carried out the inspection.

During the inspection, the District Collector directly distributed onions to the public and explained the objectives and benefits of this scheme. He ensured that onion distribution was being carried out properly.

Furthermore, he provided various guidelines to the officials working at the shop. He instructed them to maintain proper daily records of onion sales details and the details of purchasers in a register. He stated that this would ensure transparent distribution.

This scheme has provided significant relief to the public. While onion prices in the market range from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg, the availability at Rs 35 at ration shops is proving to be a great help to people.
