‘We The Leaders’ Foundation Takes Up Clean-up Drive at Coimbatore’s Kurichi Tank

More than 100 volunteers of ‘We The Leaders’ Foundation took up a clean-up drive at Kurichi Tank in Coimbatore, removing plastic waste and water hyacinth. The volunteers also raised concerns over the large number of discarded liquor bottles found in and around the waterbody and stressed the need to protect water resources.

With sacks of plastic waste, discarded liquor bottles and other debris collected from the bunds of Kurichi Tank, more than 100 volunteers of the We The Leaders Foundation gathered on Sunday for a clean-up drive under the slogan, “Our Tank, Our Responsibility, Our Pride.”

Aimed not only at removing waste but also at reinforcing public responsibility towards protecting Coimbatore’s waterbodies, the drive saw the participation of youth, students and environmental enthusiasts from different parts of the city.

According to the organisers, Kurichi Tank is among Coimbatore’s important waterbodies, and the clean-up was undertaken with an emphasis on protecting the resource and contributing to groundwater conservation.



Since the drive began on Sunday morning, volunteers said they had removed large quantities of plastic waste, water hyacinth and other debris from the bunds and areas where water had accumulated. A significant number of discarded liquor bottles were also found during the clean-up, drawing attention to the dumping of waste in and around the waterbody.

Participants in the drive called for stronger measures against substance abuse, particularly around schools and colleges. They said efforts to address the problem should go beyond action against individual offenders, with greater emphasis on prevention and enforcement.



The volunteers also highlighted concerns over changing weather patterns and their potential impact on water availability. They stressed the need to protect and restore waterbodies before environmental challenges lead to more serious water shortages.



The clean-up drive, which brought together more than 100 volunteers, was aimed at encouraging greater public participation in protecting and maintaining Coimbatore’s water resources.
