Woman dies in mudslide at construction site

Mudslide at a construction site on Tiger Hill Road left a woman labourer dead on Wednesday.

The victim, Devi (30), and her husband Raja from Kanthal Kumarasamy Street in Udhagamandalam Town were among the five persons who were working at the site.

District Fire Officer G. Elango, who supervised the rescue operation, said that the workers were excavating mud from a low-lying area to construct the basement of a house, when mud fell on them around 1 p.m.

While Raja and other labourers managed to escape, Devi was caught under a thick layer of mud.

Fire and rescue service personnel used an earthmover to remove the mud. About half an hour after the rescue operation began, the body of the woman, a mother of two, was recovered.

The body was sent to Udhagamandalam Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The B-1 Police have registered a case and are investigating.
