Synergy among three armed forces a must, says President Pranab Mukherjee

President Pranab Mukherjee stressed the importance of the synergy between the three armed forces to ensure victory in conflicts while addressing the convocation of the 71st Staff Course at the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), in Wellington, on Friday.

This synergy ensured victory in 1971 war for India, thanks to which Bangladesh was liberated, he said.

In his 15-minute speech, the President described the DSSC as the most premier joint military institution of the world. "I am delighted to learn that 35 officers from 25 friendly foreign countries shall be graduating from the portals of this college today... I hope that the deep bonds of friendship and camaraderie that you have forged amongst you will transcribe into everlasting ties of brotherhood between our nations in an eternal dimension of time," he said.

He asked the graduating officers to be well versed on the history of various conflicts and latest technology available for successful military operations.

He called upon them to "effectively leverage their combat power of your forces," to serve the country.

"As your Supreme Commander, I implore you to do this with total loyalty, distinction, steadfastness and patriotic fervour," he said.

The President, who arrived in Coimbatore on a chartered flight, reached Wellington in a chopper. Before addressing the convocation, Mukherjee visited the War Memorial in Wellington.

A total of 458 officers, including 35 officers from 25 friendly foreign countries, including, Bangladesh, Kenya, Brazil, Afghanistan, UK, US and Nigeria, graduated from the DSSC after 45 weeks of intensive training. Mukherjee presented medals to award winners of the trainee officers and handed over parchments to the foreign officers.

Lt Gen SK Gadeock, Commandant, DSSC, who welcomed the gathering, presented a 'Banner of Excellence' to the President on behalf of the college. Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosiah was also present.
