2 Kerala men fined for trying to dump meat waste

Election flying squad caught two truck drivers trying to dump fish and poultry waste from Kerala at Sulur in Coimbatore on Tuesday night. They were carrying meat waste without following the proper norms and in violations of the norms. Police have filed a case against the truck owners.

Officials said K Siva, 22 and P Sarthkumar, 25, truck drivers, were travelling from Palakkad. While they were crossing Rawathur Junction near Trichy Road, the election flying squad was on duty checking vehicles and caught them carrying meat waste. They were immediately handed over to the Sulur police and a case was registered against them.

"We have previously caught several lorries from Tamil Nadu dumping waste in areas like Pollachi, Madukkarai and Chavady. But this is the first time a lorry from Kerala was caught trying to illegally dump waste in Sulur," said police.

The drivers told police that they were not dumping the waste in Sulur, but were transporting it to Namakkal, where it would be used as organic manure for coconut farms. They were booked under Section 378 (Making atmosphere noxious to health) of Indian Penal Code.

District administration officials have already warned truck drivers from transporting waste from other states and dumping them in farmlands. "Most times even medical and hazardous waste gets dumped in these areas which is dangerous," said an official.

The drivers were arrested and released on bail. They paid a fine and got their trucks as well.

Another such case was reported from Annur where sanitary workers were caught by residents dumping garbage into the Allikulam Lake. The residents said that they had complained to the panchayat officials several times, regarding the issue and how it has become a menace.

Residents said the odour emanating from the lake is nauseating and ground water in the area has been affected. The officials assured residents that they will take all measures to prevent dumping of garbage into the lake.
