Fitness and entertainment take centre stage at car free sunday

“I was here last weekend and had lots of fun. I liked it so much, that I’ve brought my friend with me today,” beamed 70-year-old Saraswathi, a resident of Madurai who is visiting her daughter here. The NSR Road, which is usually busy with vehicles and the sound of blaring horns, was on Sunday morning filled with people playing, drawing on roads, skating, cycling, doing yoga and clicking selfies.

The Beethoven Fitness team, charged the whole crowd by starting the day with enjoyable exercises and the ninth week of Car-Free Sundays concluded with a happy note when two clowns from Nepal - Bisharad and Jagdeesh - enthralled the spectators with their amusing tricks and impressive expressions. “I believe that laughter is the best therapy. I love the festive environment here and was moved by the massive crowd,” said Bisharad.

Abhijeeth Dubey from Chennai surprised the Coimbatore crowd with his mesmerizing beat boxing skills. The audience were seen tapping their feet to the beats of All about that bass . “We found the concept of Car Free Sundays pretty interesting and we think it is high time other cities had its own,” said the beat boxer and his co-performer, R. Arvind.

Meanwhile, people were drawn to the Swiss exercise balls brought for a session by the Ortho One, Coimbatore. Its physiotherapist K Ganesh headed the interactive session and taught the participants various techniques to go about it.

K. Sushil of the JCI (Junior Chamber International) along with his troop engaged the crowd all through the event with games like Kola Kolaiya Mundirikai.

Students of VLB Janakiammal Arts and Science and CMS College then took over the stage for performances such as dance, mime, mimicry and karaoke.
