Unrest over auto driver’s death

There was unrest in Udhagamandalam Town on Thursday evening following the death of an autorickshaw driver after he was attacked by a family at Kandal.

It is learnt that a family was standing near Mukkonam junction at Kandal in the evening when autorickshaw driver Govindan (47) stopped his vehicle there and is said to have accidentally fallen on a woman from the family. Agitated over the act, the family beat the man.

Meanwhile, autorickshaw drivers, who witnessed the incident, took Govindhan to the Udhagamandalam Government Hospital, where he was declared as brought dead.

Around 200 autorickshaw drivers picketed G1 Police Station seeking the arrest of the persons who assaulted Govindhan. The police assured them necessary action and picked up two men for questioning.
