Drunkard sleeps next to dead wife for 24 hours

45-year-old woman who fought with her husband after he failed to quit his habit of drinking, committed suicide by hanging at Selakarichal near Sulur on Thursday night. Her husband, however was too drunk to realise that his wife had died and spent more than 24 hours with the body. Neighbours informed police who sent the body to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Rajeswari, 45, of Paramasivan Temple Street at Selakarichal. Police said she was married to M Muruganandam, 44, of Thuraiyur in Trichy, for four years. On Thursday night, he returned home drunk and Rajeswari fought with him. She then locked herself in the room and hanged herself.

On Friday morning he found his wife hanging, but was too drunk to realise she was dead and so he brought the body down and went back to the Tasmac. Later he came back and slept next to the body.
