Candidates share a platform to spell out their agenda

Spell out their agenda what Coimbatore needs.

In a packed hall on Wednesday evening, eight candidates who are in the fray in the Assembly elections spoke about their plans for development of the city.

They were from the DMK, AIADMK, BJP, Congress, PMK, MDMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi, and Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi and they took part in a meeting organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore. While four of them are contesting in Coimbatore South, three are in the fray in Singanallur, and one in Coimbatore North.

The chamber and 11 other organisations jointly prepared a list of demands on “What Kovai City Wants: 10 Smart Solutions for This Future Smart City”. It was released by the chamber president D. Nandakumar and received by president of Residents’ Awareness Association of Coimbatore C.R. Swaminathan. A copy of the demands was presented to all the candidates.

Major Demands

Among the major demands were the needs for a Coimbatore Urban Development Authority, revision of Master Plan, expansion of Coimbatore airport, more roads, support for revival of the River Noyyal.

According to Vanathi Srinivasan, BJP candidate for Coimbatore South, the manifesto she released on Wednesday for Coimbatore South had most of the demands presented by the associations. Coimbatore was in the focus of the Central Government and it had allocated several projects for the district.

Basic Amenities

C. Padmanabhan, CPI (M) candidate, said he had been a councillor of Coimbatore Corporation and knows the needs of the city. He would focus on basic amenities such as toilets and provide water supply and hygienic surroundings to the roadside eateries.

Mayura S. Jayakumar of Congress (Coimbatore South), said as a businessman, he was aware of the problems faced by the trade and industry.

“I will use my privilege for the benefit of the public and my priority is for basic facilities.”

According to Amman Arjunan, the AIADMK candidate for Coimbatore South, the State Government had taken up several projects such as the Gandhipuram flyover and removed power cut.

The Government had allocated Rs. 2,438 crore for infrastructure development in the city.

DMK candidate for Singanallur N. Karthik said the assembly constituency had 10,000 MSMEs and he would be a bridge between the industries and the Government.

Meeting

If DMK forms the next Government he will take steps to have regular meeting of the industry representatives with the Chief Minister. He would take efforts to complete the road over bridges and airport expansion projects.

Anjunraj, the MDMK candidate for Singanallur, said that if elected, he will work for a single window system for industries, promote solar energy, and metro rail project for Coimbatore.

Ashok Jayendar of PMK (Singanallur), said he would strive to create a common platform for the companies in his Assembly, if elected as MLA.

Kalyanasundaram of Naam Tamilar Katchi for Singanallur and Premkumar, Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi for Coimbatore North, also spoke.
