Dispute over pathway to burial ground

Security was stepped up at the Adi-Dravidar Colony at Avalappampatty near Negamam following a clash between two scheduled caste communities on Tuesday over using the road to the burial ground in the village. Cases were registered against 13 persons from both communities and binding over was done under the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code in writing that they would not create trouble.

According to the police, nearly 120 families from Arunthathiyar community and 19 families from another community lived in Avalappampatty village. There are two paths to the burial ground there.

One could be accessed on foot but was a little longer and not easily accessible.

The other was through a locality where those from another community live and was the only route that ambulance could use. Police sources said that on February 15 (this year), those belonging to the other community blocked the path to the burial ground through their area. Police and revenue officials did not taken action to remove the obstruction and the other community too did not take it seriously.

On Tuesday seventy-five-year-old Kumaran alias Kumarasamy from Arunthathiyar community died.

His family tried to take his body to the burial ground through the road used by the other community, to which the latter raised objection. This resulted in a clash between the two groups.

According to the police, the minority community claimed that they would not allow the body to be taken through their locality as there was a temple in the area and that some anti-social elements raised a ruckus during burial ceremonies. Tahsildar Jaya Chitra and the police intervened and held talks with both communities.

Police and revenue officials then removed the obstruction on the pathway.

The police said that the situation had been resolved and that Arunthathiyars could take the bodies to the burial ground through both roads.
