BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan attacked in Coimbatore

BJP candidate for Coimbatore South constituency Vanathi Srinivasan was allegedly attacked by AIADMK men on Sunday afternoon.

When Vanathi, who is also the party's state vice-president, visited the Town Hall to attend a programme, a group of men, allegedly AIADMK workers, gheraoed her. Police said the incident took place when she was getting into her car after attending a funeral.

The men, armed with sickles and iron rods, attacked her and she sustained injuries on her hand though BJP workers accompanying Vanathi tried to protect her. The window panes of her car were also damaged.

The miscreants fled the scene after the incident. Later, Vanathi left the spot in another vehicle. A few BJP workers, who suffered injuries were admitted to the government hospital, a source said. "They used foul language against me and blocked my SUV. When I got into another vehicle, the AIADMK men blocked that too. They broke the vehicle's windshield," Vanathi said, adding that she had registered a complaint with the police.

When asked about the reason for the attack, she said, "I don't know the reason. The AIADMK men demanded to know why we came to RG Street where AIADMK councillor Adi Narayan's office is situated."

The attack took place after BJP cadre had started spreading a message that AIADMK men were distributing cash in the constituency. AIADMK sources said they had also filed a complaint against BJP workers for beating up their workers, when they protested against Vanathi entering into the prayer hall to canvass for votes.
