Exporters urged to tap online potential

Companies here that are into exports should move towards digital economy to tap the e-commerce potential, according to Mentor on Road and founder of Cluster Pulse Jagat Shah.

Mr. Shah told The Hindu on Tuesday that Chinese manufacturers sell automobile components and pumpsets online. Indian micro, small and medium-scale enterprises buy several products online. The units should start selling their products also on the digital medium.

Exports have declined across the country because of the global economic slowdown. “We should now move to the digital economy and tap opportunities there.”

Mr. Shah, who is on his second visit to the city in the last one year, said that several challenges expressed by the MSMEs here during his previous visit have been taken up with the Union Government and are being addressed at different levels. These included problems related to access to finance, technology, and skilled manpower. The MUDRA scheme has benefited several MSMEs in Tamil Nadu too as loan is available without collateral.

“We will do a programme in Coimbatore in another two months with Reliance Commercial Finance. Nearly 500 participants are expected at the event and collateral-free loans will be available to MSMEs,” he said.

In the case of start-ups, more funds are available in the country for these units and entrepreneurs should come up with viable and attractive business plans.

At a meeting at Confederation of Indian Industry, he spoke on the six missions of the Union Government, which included Clean India, Skill India, Make in India, and Digital India. He also discussed with the participants the problems they faced in IT adoption, marketing, and exports.

“Young people are coming forward in Coimbatore in the start-up segment and also to venture into new sectors. Coimbatore has the entrepreneurship eco-system. Now, the State Government should take initiatives to develop start-ups. Every State should have initiatives to promote start-ups,” he said.
