Plus Two results bring cheer to textile mill workers, rescued child labourers

Plus-two examinations results that were announced on Tuesday have brought cheer to several textile mill workers and rescued child workers in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts.

For more than 175 women workers in KPR Mills, it was a day for celebrations. They had discontinued studies for various reasons and joined work. But, with special coaching at the mills, they have been able to complete Plus Two this year.

Spinning mills

A total of 181 workers employed at the spinning mills and garment units of the KPR group had written plus two examinations this year. Of them, three or four workers had quit the unit. Kalaivani, who is from Vellore and is now employed with the group, has scored 1149 and wants to continue higher studies.

As many as 19 candidates have scored more than 1000 and seven have scored over 1100.

All of them will take up college studies through distance education programmes. According to the group, the workers had completed Standard X or Plus-One and gone to work as their family was not able to support their higher studies.

After joining KPR, the workers had continued studies and now completed plus two.

An official of National Child Labour Project here said that 15 rescued child workers wrote Plus Two examinations this year in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts and 13 have passed.

M. Devi of Tirupur, who was working in a coconut husk removing unit, was rescued and helped to join Class VIII. She has scored 987 marks in plus two examinations this year. Vishnu Prabhu, who was also rescued from a coconut husk removing unit, has scored 756 and wants to join marine engineering course.

D. Vijayakumar, project director of NCLP, said that five boys and 10 girls wrote the exams and nine girls and four boys have passed. All of them want to continue higher education.

Grant

The district administration will request the State Government to grant each of them Rs. 6000 a year for three years, till they complete graduation.
