Revamping of major junctions to begin

The national highway's ambitious project of re-designing two major junctions, Sungam junction and Lanka Corner junction at an estimated cost of Rs6.5 crore will begin this week, said officials.

Though tenders were floated, the project was stalled due to the model code of conduct. Both these junctions will be re-designed by removing the traffic signals.

This project is based on the study conducted by the highways department at Chennai's Egmore junction near the police commissioner's office.

At the Sungam junction, the highways department plans to set up a rotary island in the centre and remove all the traffic signals.

"Since five roads converge in that junction, there is a lot of confusion among the public. We plan to set up the island, remove encroachments and ensure that the traffic pattern in that junction is more systematic. Free left would be set up near the drains of Valankulam tank and the unnecessary traffic islands would be removed from that junction," said an official.

At Sungam junction, the road from Ukkadam, Singanallur, Puliyakulam, Nirmala college road and CMCH meet. The project is estimated at Rs4 crore at the Sungam junction.

At Lanka corner, the department plans to set up drains that will be 90m in length and 1,2m in depth. Footpaths will be set up and encroachments will be removed to regularize traffic at that junction. This project includes removal of encroachments and the estimated cost is Rs2.5 crore.

"We have held talks with the private shop owners at Lanka corner. It is in its final stages. In the meantime, we will set up drains and footpaths," said the official.

The official said that it is necessary to implement this road re-design project because most medians on these roads are not as per the Indian Road Congress standards.

"All the centre medians in these stretches will be removed and set up as per the IRC standards. Because of these medians, there is traffic congestion at these two junctions," said the official.
