Extend deadline for play school registration

The Coimbatore District Play School Owners Association petitioned the collectorate on Monday seeking a year's time to conform to the new regulations. Centre had set a June 22 deadline.

The association said that they welcomed the Centre's decision for new regulations to govern play schools. "The Centre ordered schools to complete the process of obtaining recognition within six months (June 22)," said president of the association K Gowthaman. "Some of the changes require investments of 1 to 30 lakh, and with most school owners being from middle-class families we are finding it hard to meet the financial requirement immediately," he said.

They also said that certain rules are not found in rules for other school-levels. "For example, play schools should have two doors for one classroom, teachers have to get police certificates and maids require medical certificates. They say that rented buildings should have a five-year registered agreement with owner and gas cylinders should not be in the building," he said. " But for providing food to day-care children, gas cylinder has to be used," he added.
