Undertrial jumps off 20-ft high Sabarmati Central Jail, escapes

An undertrial prisoner escaped from Sabarmati Central Jail by jumping off a 20-ft high wall Sunday, leaving the jail authorities as well as police in shock. The breach of security from the high-security jail has raised alarms which forced the authority to hand over the investigation to Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB).

The undertrial Pravin Dhaval alias Bholo, in his early 20s, was recently booked in a murder case by Sardarnagar police and was arrested on June 11 by the DCB officials. Sources said that Bholo’s escape has been captured by the CCTV camera. However, the footage is said to be so blurry that it is difficult to ascertain how he climbed the walls which also have barbed wire on them.

According to sources, Bholo escaped from the jail some time on Sunday afternoon between 1 pm to 2 pm. He was found missing during the counting of prisoners. The jail authority lodged a complaint late in the night and a manhunt was launched to nab him. An SRP jawan who was posted at the watch tower of the jail has been suspended for negligence.

“He used the wall that connects the main wall like a perpendicular. The CCTV footage shows a human-like figure climbing the wall. The biggest puzzle is how he managed to get away from the barbed wire through which 7,000 volts runs. It is not true that there was no electricity at that time,” said a jail official.

He added that the height of the wall is around 15-ft and on top of it there is an electric fence which has 16 wires in the gap of 4 inches. Technically, he said, it anything weighing 15 kg touches the wire it will trip and collapse. But in this nothing of this sort has happened. The wires are intact, he said. “From the footage, it is not clear whether Bholo touched the wire or not. Things will be clear only if he is caught,” the source added.

Earlier, in 2013 the jail had hit headlines after a jailbreak attempt by 24 undertrials of 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blast. They had dug a 213-foot long tunnel to escape which was discovered in the nick of time.
