Railways and forest officials discuss on options to preclude elephant death

The constant rise in elephant death due to train collisions has forced the officials to discern options to preclude such uneventful happenings in the future.

Today, Coimbatore District Forest Officer Periyasamy and Palakkad Railway Asst. Divisional Engineer Lokanayaki along with their team conducted a survey across the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. where many elephant deaths were reported in recent past.

After analysing the tracks, they zeroed on two crossing zones frequently used by the elephants.

The District Forest Officer Periyasamy revealed that they have planned to broaden the pathways and clear off the bushes along the crossing zones to felicitate easy animal movement. Shortly, a State level meeting will be convened to debrief on the issues and to regulate train speeds at all elephant corridors.

He also proposed that, constructing bridges across the crossing zones would help to curtail such plaintive happenings. He emphasised that stringent action would be appropriated on people who scare the wild animals by bursting crackers and injure them.

It is our prime responsibility to protect the habitat and livelihood of wild animals, he affirmed.
