Aadi Perukku celebrations around the city

Aadi Perukku' is an ancient & unique South Indian Tamil festival celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi. It's a day of offerings and prayers for overall prosperity of people's lives and mother nature.

People gather around the water beds to offer their prayers and rituals for all the departed souls of their families.

The festival pays tribute to mother nature for blessing the agricultural lands with abundant monsoon rains, hence it is celebrated near river basins, water tanks, lakes, and wells.

The sowing and planting takes place usually in the month of Aadi due to plentitude of water at all water bodies. Subsequently, the harvest will be done during the Tamil month 'Thai' (January) which is celebrated as Pongal.

With the failure of monsoons around the city, the water beds of Perur which is the prime location to celebrate the festival in Coimbatore was totally dry. Hence, people performed their rituals and dissolved their offerings in small water tubs and basins of water instead of letting it in the river.

Alagirisamy and Rajathi, a couple who had come to Perur to perform their rituals to their father, stated that 'It is disappointing to see the water beds so dry and last year it was much better. This festival marks the beginning for farmers to start their harvest. And blessings from our ancestors is every important to stay healthy & wealthy through the year''.
