Kerala: NIA arrests six youths with suspected IS links for terrorism conspiracy

The radicalised youths, who were all between the ages of 24 to 30, were allegedly part of a criminal conspiracy to commit acts of terror.

Three months after reports of 21 people missing from Kerala suspected to have joined the IS, the NIA today arrested six people for allegedly conspiring to commit terrorist acts. The six were arrested from Kozhikode and Kannur districts of Kerala. All the arrested are aged between 24 to 30, and are suspected to have been part of an IS-inspired module.

An official statement from the NIA stated that "credible information was received that some youth from Kerala and Tamil Nadu along with their accomplices have entered into a criminal conspiracy to commit terrorist acts by collecting explosives and other offensive material for targeting important persons and places of public importance in various parts of south lndia."

Based on the information, the Centre had directed the NIA to investigate into the said conspiracy and accordingly, the NIA registered a case at Kochi Branch on October 1 under section 120B, 121, 121A and 122 of IPC  and  sections 18, 18B, 20, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

NIA Launched Surveillance of Accused with Help of Police

Furthermore, the NIA teams along with Kerala police, Delhi police and Telangana police, launched surveillance on the movements of the accused involved in the conspiracy.

During searches conducted today in the districts of Kozhikode and Kannur in Kerala, Manseed, Abu Basheer, Swalih Mohammed, Safwan P, Jasim NK and Ramshad Nageelan Kandiyil were arrested for their involvement in the conspiracy. Five of them were arrested while they were conducting a meeting at Kanakamala hilltop in Kannur district in Kerala. And during subsequent searches, another person was detained from Kuttiyadi in Kozhikode district and arrested later on.

During the searches, the NIA also seized incriminating material including electronic devices from their possession and search of their premises.

The arrested persons will be produced before a NIA Special Court in Ernakulam for seeking their police custody for further examination.
