Truck falls into Buckingham Canal in Chennai, one body recovered

At least one person died when a truck engaged for Chennai metro rail work fell into the Buckingham Canal from Moolakothalam bridge in the early hours of Monday.

The truck was heading to Mint from Vysarpadi when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck hit the parapet of the bridge and fell into the canal.

The accident happened around 2am. There were at least five people on the truck, police said.

On being alerted by passersby, police and fire personnel rushed to the spot. They recovered the body of the driver, Parthiban.

Rescue efforts were continuing.
