Injured elephant being treated at Madukkarai

The lower jaw area of an elephant was swollen and inflammation in the oral cavity was also observed in this animal. Reasons for the same could be Foot and Mouth Disease, external injury or accident. A highly placed source pointed out that “Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) that affects the foot and mouth of the animal could be the cause. However, the animal’s gait (pattern of movement of the limbs of animals) will be normal. Accidents can result in injuring the animals tusk and oral cavity. Malicious acts like blast can also damage the oral cavity, tongue and soft tissue. Lastly, the animals involvement in playful activity can also result in causing damage to its oral cavity.” said the source.

This source also added that this injured elephant is currently undergoing treatment under the supervision of Forest Range Officer (FRO) Madukkarai. Necessary arraignments for the oral treatment of this elephant have been made and we are told that medication is administered to this elephant on banana leaf.

This animal that is being monitored by 20 field staff is sometimes sported in the company of another older bull.
