Bengaluru may get a new cricket stadium by 2019

If all goes as per plan, Bengaluru will have another cricket ground like the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, will all the fancy fittings of an international sports complex. The only challenge is, the land is currently a huge mound of refuse - a dump yard of sorts - in Devarachikkanahalli, near Begur village.

To transform this garbage dump into a world-class stadium, funds are likely to be drawn from the PM's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan under which Bengaluru has been given Rs 41.15 crore.

The local Bommanahalli ward corporator, CR Rajmohan Raju, has already hired New Delhi-based firm KlimArt Private Ltd for the construction of the sports complex.

Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner (solid waste management), said the area was currently a garbage dump. The local people had raised the issue of their health being at risk. And so, it should not only be cleaned but also have a playground and pathways. It might take about Rs 1.9 crore just to level out the place, he said.

The same amount can be utilised from the Union government's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan project in which the government has released Rs 41.45 crore for Bengaluru city. "The action plan for the project is yet to be drawn," said Raju.

The sports complex will also have a gymnastics facility. "I would like to see more gymnasts from Bengaluru city. I want to see the project completed in 20 months after it takes off. It should launch on October 2, the day when PM launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan," said the corporator.
