About 40-lakh in cash and 150 sovereigns of gold looted by gang posing as IT officers

Basheer (45) a waste cotton trader, residing in Singanallur in the city claimed that a group of men visited his home as early as 5:30 am last morning. The men posing as officers from the Income Tax Department informed this businessman that they have visited his home based on a tip-off. They told him that they were here to conduct a raid.

Basheer told the police that the neatly dressed men made him disconnect the CCTV camera recordings of his home and also the hard disk that stores the recordings. The gang of men took away 40-lakh in cash and 150 sovereigns of gold from his home.

The men who were in two cars took with them a locker in which the cash was stored and the gold from his home. The men also took Basheer along with them in one of their cars and dropped him off at Neelambur.

When Basheer reached his home, he called the Income Tax department only to learn that the raid was bogus. He informed the Singanallur police of this incident. A case has been registered in this regard and the investigation is on.
