Bengal gram prices to fall

Farm gate prices of Bengal gram might fall by Rs 500 this year due to the low yield, an analysis of the domestic and market intelligence cell of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has predicted. The legume might be sold at Rs 4,300 per quintal this season.

Bengal gram is a Rabi crop mainly sown in September-November, and harvested in February. In Tamil Nadu, Bengal gram is majorly cultivated in Coimbatore and Tiruppur. In 2015-16 rabi season, the cultivated area of Bengal gram in Coimbatore and Tiruppur is 2000ha, which is less than the total cultivated area of the crop in 2014-15 in these districts.

"So, the production in these regions is likely to be low. The present market price in Udumalapet regulated market is Rs 4800 per quintal," a release issued by the university said.

The DEMIC of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, in order to help farmers take proper selling decisions, conducted an econometric analysis of Bengal gram prices.

"As per the results of the analysis, farm gate price of Bengal gram will be around Rs 4,300-4,500 per quintal during March - April, 2016. Hence, farmers are advised to take appropriate selling decision according to the market advisory," the university release said.

Madhya Pradesh is the single largest producer of Bengal Gram in the country, accounting for more than 40% of total production. In India, during 2014- 15, the total cultivated area for Bengal gram was 85 lakh hectares with the production of 71.70 lakh tonnes.

India is one of the major producer of Bengal gram in the world. In India, Desi and Kabuli are two main types of chick pea that are cultivated in the ratio of 3:1 contributing for over 75% of total production in the world. Bengal gram accounts for about 45 per cent of total pulses produced in the country.

Bengal gram contributes for the largest share in India's export basket of pulses registering 85.64% share in the total pulses export during 2014-15. The major export destinations of Bengal gram are Pakistan, Algeria, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and Turkey.
