PUCL committee to determine reasons for recent violence in Coimbatore

Last month (in September), Hindu Munnani functionary C Sasikumar was hacked to death by unidentified assailants. This caused violence and unrest in several parts in our city. The city police has so far arrested over 400 people in connection with the recent violence. A truth finding committee of the Peoples Union Civil Liberties (PUCL) has been formed.

Markandan, Former Vice Chancellor of Gandhigram University, Thiyagu of Tamil Desiya Viduthalai Iyakkam, Samuel Raja of Taminadu Untouchability Abolition Movement, lawyers and social activists are a part of this team. This 18 member committee will investigate the circumstances that caused the recent violence. It will also be investigated if the violence was spread systematically or if it was a spontaneous reaction to the murder of the Hindu Munnani leader.

The truth finding PUCL committee stated that people in the city are gripped with fear post the recent violence that took place. Several shops, a police vehicle among other vehicles were burnt at Thudiyalur in the city.

The PUCL team will also investigate the failure of police department to control the violence and losses incurred by people. Murali, organiser of this committee and general secretary of People Union for Civil Liberties speaking to the press after the inspection said “Most of the people who participated in this violence are young people. The violence seems a systematically planned and executed operation. A report will be submitted to the government at the end of this investigation. Suggestions will be provided to avoid such incidents in future. A similar inspection was carried out in Tirupur about the bandh and violence.” Murali said.
