Mumbai: Bandra illegal shanty crashes, 6 kids killed

Six children were killed after a ground plus four-storey unauthorised shanty collapsed in Mumbai’s Bandra East area on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place when one portion of the shanty fell because of the weak basement on the slums of Behrampada, injuring five and trapping many others.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and fire brigade officials have been carrying out rescue operations at the spot.

According to data acquired by the MCGM disaster management cell, “We received a call at around 1:40 pm and immediately two fire brigade engines, one rescue van and one ambulance were rushed to the spot to carry out the rescue operation.”

Prabhat Rahangdale, chief fire brigade official said, “Rescue efforts are underway. Women and children calling for help were spotted and successfully rescued from the debris and rushed to Bhabha hospital in Bandra.”

“We could not use any heavy machinery due to the congested and narrow lane and also because of a wall to the wall construction of buildings made our job difficult,” added Rahangdale.

Dr Archana, the casualty medical officer, Bandra Bhabha Hospital said, “There are six children who have been declared dead; one boy and five girls. The list of dead is Ayesha Akbar Khan (12), Ali Nisar Ahmed Khan (three and half), Osama Nisar Khan (14), Afifa Sadas Nisar Khan (1), Aribi Sadas Nisar Khan (2), Rusuda Nisar Ahmed Khan (16) and Aayesha Akbar Khan(12).”

“Also, five people – two women and three men have suffered injuries. They have been identified as Doulat Shaikh (50), Zulfekar Nisar Khan (18), Sakhiya Nisar Ahmed Khan (35), Abdul Salam Sheikh (34) and Ismail Iqbal Shaikh (17),” informed Dr Archana.

There are thousands of people who reside in the Behrampada area risking their lives by illegally constructing their shanties which are near the sewer lines claiming their health during monsoon. The MCGM has decided to demolish all the illegal structures which are above 14 feet of height.
