Mohali: Cops arrest three for hanging pregnant stray dog from tree

Days after three men from Raipur Kalan village allegedly hung a pregnant stray canine from a tree and slashed her eyes with a machete, animal activists got together and approached the police at Sohana police station in Sector 66, Mohali on Monday, resulting in the arrest of the three accusedunder relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the three accused, the canine was attacked ruthlessly after she “tried to devour pet hens”.

It was Pardeep Singh who spotted the injured canine and immediately notified animal activists Udit and Roopika Dhillon in Mohali.

Udit, who has been following up the case, has been updating and keeping up with the police too, working hard to make them press charges.

“They are being investigated by the police and have come up with their stories…the poor animal in spite of the grievous injury, was still wagging her tail…she is about to deliver a litter in three-four days and is a pretty young canine who still has probably ten years of life more in her.

And now, due to this horrible crime, she is left blind for life,” rued Neeru Sidhu, member of the Animal Welfare Board, who has also got in touch with the Board in Delhi to lodge a complaint and take action.

“Even if FIR is registered, in such cases, there is no strict punishment and they will be let go soon,” she added. The attack had taken place on October 11.

“Being pregnant, strays like her go in search of food, but she didn’t deserve this punishment,” said Sidhu.

The accused are Makhan Singh, Harmeet Singh and Dassa. The canine, although in a bad shape, is recovering at the SPCA Hospital in Sector 38, Chandigarh.

The local police late Monday night arrested Makhan Singh, Harmeet Singh and Dassa Singh under Section 428 (Mischief by killing or maiming animal of the value of ten rupees) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
