CPI(M) wants Kerala vigilance chief to continue in office

The continuation of Jacob Thomas as Director of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) of Kerala remained a matter of widespread speculation on Wednesday.

However, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was even now “inclined” to allow him to continue as the chief anti-corruption enforcer.

Administrative Reforms Committee chairman V.S. Achuthanandan has made a clear pitch for Mr. Thomas’s continuation.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Kerala secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan discussed the matter and reportedly communicated the party’s “consensus decision” to the Chief Minister.

Mr. Thomas’s sudden offer to quit his post had apparently left the agency in the lurch.

The government had just sanctioned an anti-corruption inquiry against former Industries Minister and its strongman from Kannur E.P. Jayarajan.

Mr. Thomas’s willingness to be removed from his post had briefly opened the government to criticism that it was trying to save Mr. Jayarajan from potential prosecution.
