Government school building demolished over land row

A lower primary government school in Mahadeva Kodigehalli, off Devanahalli, was demolished overnight over an alleged dispute involving ownership of land.

The operations of the school - where 14 students studied - have temporarily been shifted to another building. A member of the school development committee, B Shivanna, said the building stood on the land till 11pm on Saturday , only to be razed to the ground by the next day .

The school had been built on land donated to the panchayat by a prominent local citizen a few decades ago. Members of his family , who claimed to have legal ownership papers of the property in question, sold the land recently. In their complaint to police, the school authorities alleged that the new owners ordered the demolition. A complaint has been registered at Bagalur police station.

Although police are investigating the incident, they said the new owners had produced documents, which attest to their ownership of the land. Shivanna said, "We have been told the land (1 acre, 25 guntas) was donated by Munibyrappa to the panchayat several decades ago. A school was constructed in 2001. After Munibyrappa's death, his family sold the land to a Hennur resident named Maruthi."

School headmaster Ramesh VK expressed outrage at the incident. "The 14 students and two teachers have been shifted to a building in a village. We also had a playground on our old premises. How can they demolish a school over night?" he asked.
