Three boys, all aged 17, drowned in a temple tank at Injambakkam where they had gone for a swim on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Ponbakiyaraj, Vishnuvardhan - residents of Thiruvanmiyur - and Vignesh of Neelankarai.
Police said that around 11.30am five boys went to the Gowriamman temple tank for a bath. While two knew swimming, the others did not. While the two went deep into the tank, the three were at the banks, learning to swim.
According to initial investigations, Ponbakiyaraj, Vishnuvardhan and Vignesh were in the water for more than two hours and might have got caught in the slush. When the two other boys came back, they alerted the public who tried to retrieve the bodies but could not. They informed the Thiruvanmiyur fire and rescue service personnel who rushed to the spot and pulled out the three bodies from the tank. The bodies were sent to Government General Hospital for the autopsy.
The police said the boys were Class 12 students of a corporation school at Thiruvanmiyur. " The boys had been coming to the tank to learn swimming," said an investigating officer.
"The two boys did not notice their friends drowning, as they were swimming on the other side of the tank," he said. A case has been registered with the Neelankarai police station and investigations are on.
