Idols vandalised at Avinashi Lingeshwarar Temple by mentally challenged man

In a shocking incident, kalasam and idols of the famous Avinashilingeswarar temple in Tirupur district were stolen and idols damaged. During the investigation conducted by the police, it was revealed that the youth who was hiding on the top of the temple tower was mentally challenged.

Tirupur: Devotees and Hindu organisations staged a protest against the vandalisation of idols at the Avinashi Lingeshwarar temple.

As usual, the priests of the Avinashi Lingeshwarar temple have opened the door in the early hours of the morning. At that time, the objects in the temple were scattered. 



Also, the kalash of the gopurams with 63 Nayanmars were stolen and the idols were damaged.

Shocked by this, he immediately informed the temple administration and the Avinashi police in this regard. Police reached the spot on the information and initiated an investigation. 

At that time, it was found that a young man was hiding on the top of the temple tower.

Following this, police warned the man to get down, and he did so. During his interrogation, it was found that he had stolen puja objects, including a brass vel and a gopuram kalash.



The man has been identified as Saravana Bharathi (32), a mentally challenged person, who was treated for mental illness at the Avinashi Government Hospital. 

The young man has tattoos all over his body in Hindi. The police investigation also revealed that the arrested youth is a native of Vengamadai near Erode.



Earlier, as news spread that the idols had been vandalised, devotees and some organisations gathered in front of the Avinashi Lingeswarar temple and staged a protest.
