India's First Metal-Free All-Ceramic Total Knee Replacement Performed at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore

Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore marks a medical milestone with the successful performance of India's first metal-free all-ceramic total knee replacement, led by Prof Dr. S Rajasekaran and his team.

Coimbatore: Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore, achieved a significant breakthrough in orthopedic surgery by performing India's first metal-free all-ceramic total knee replacement. This pioneering surgery was conducted by Prof Dr. S Rajasekaran and his team, setting a new standard in joint replacement technology.

The innovative BPK – S integration ceramic knee system, developed through the collaborative efforts of orthopedic surgeons, engineers, and material scientists, aims to minimize particulate wear, ensure effective soft tissue management, and provide optimal joint tracking. These features contribute to the prosthesis's enhanced longevity, addressing one of the main challenges in knee replacements – the adverse reactions caused by metal wear.

Traditional metal knee replacements often lead to debris of cobalt, chromium, and nickel, causing lymphocyte-dominated cell responses, inflammation, and sometimes hypersensitivity reactions, resulting in pain and prolonged inflammation post-surgery. The BPK – S integration system, being the world's first all-ceramic knee system, offers a completely metal-free treatment option. Its hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and tissue-friendly properties have shown excellent results in patients with proven metal allergies.

The successful procedure at Ganga Hospital, which included contributions from Prof Dr. Michael Wagner from Germany, highlights the hospital's commitment to innovative and patient-centric care. The ceramic system's clinical advantages include high immunological tolerance, no toxicity risk, reduced polyethylene wear, less biofilm formation, and improved visualization in medical imaging.

The Arthroplasty unit of Ganga Hospital is a leading joint replacement center in India, performing over 3000 joint replacements annually. The unit is known for introducing significant innovations in joint replacement, including the adoption of the fourth-generation image Robotic system – VELYS, for precise and accurate total knee replacements.
