Court seizes government bus for not compensating accident victim

A very annoyed district court of Ooty today seized a Government bus for repeatedly failing to pay compensation to a woman who sustained serious injuries after a government bus hit her about nine years ago.

60-year-old Shakuntalabai had filed case in the court, after she was hit by the bus when she was alighting from another bus on September 22, 2007. She had demanded a compensation of Rs.15 lakhs for the serious injuries that she had sustained in the accident.

The court, in its order on September 8, 2009, had directed the Government to pay Rs.3.78 lakhs to her. But the payment was never made. Shakuntalabai eventually died in 2013.

Based on the case filed by the family of the deceased, the District Court Judge M. Sarvamangala ordered to seize a bus. Accordingly, a bus belonging to the state-run transport service was seized and placed at the court premises today.
