Coimbatore Authorities Take Action Against Shops and Food Outlets for Working on Labour Day

On May Day, 162 establishments including 78 food outlets in Coimbatore were found not providing mandatory holiday to employees; legal actions and fines imposed.


Coimbatore: In observance of May Day, recognized as a national holiday, it is mandatory for all employers to grant a holiday to their workers. However, a sudden inspection conducted by the Labour Department in Coimbatore on May 1 revealed numerous violations across the city.

During the inspections, which covered various areas including Coimbatore, Pollachi, and Mettupalayam, it was discovered that 162 establishments had employees working without prior notification of a holiday. Notably, the offenses included 80 shops, 78 food companies, and 4 transport firms that failed to observe this mandatory holiday.

As a result of these violations, legal actions have been initiated against the owners of these establishments, and fines have been imposed. Additional measures have been instructed to either provide a compensatory leave or double wages for the day worked, as compensation for the workers. The enforcement of these compensations will be closely monitored in the upcoming days.
