Coimbatore: The serene regions of Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, and areas around Bhavani Sagar Dam experienced an unexpected twist in weather from fierce summer heat to a tumultuous cloudy atmosphere on May 4th. It started raining heavily around 4 PM affecting several areas including Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Karamadai, Velliyangadu, and others.
The turbulent rain, intensified by cyclonic winds, specifically wreaked havoc around Sirumugai and nearby regions, resulting in significant damage to banana cultivation. Thousands of banana trees, nearing harvest and spread across various banana varieties like Kadali, Nendran, Poovan, and Sevvazhai, were shattered by the storm's intense wind.
Local farmer Prakash from Lingapuram expressed his distress, explaining how the sudden climatic shift compounded the issues caused by the ongoing harsh summer. "Our region was already suffering from intense summer heat, and with these cyclonic rains, the banana plantation spanning thousands of acres has taken a hit. We urge the Tamil Nadu government to consider the plight of banana farmers and provide necessary relief," he stated.
