Elephant Found Dead in Thadagam Mangarai Stream Area, Coimbatore

An elephant was found dead near the Thadagam area in Coimbatore during a routine patrol by the Forestry officials on May 7 morning. Further investigations are underway.

Coimbatore: During a regular patrol in the Mangarai area of Thadagam on the morning of May 7, Forestry officials came across a tragic sight—a dead elephant lying near the Thadagam Mangarai Stream. The deceased elephant was found approximately 150 meters away from the forested area.

Upon discovery, the officials promptly reported the incident to higher authorities for further action. A team led by District Forest Officer Jayaraj, Forest Conservator Thirumugan, and Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Sukumar inspected the site. Preliminary investigations revealed that the elephant, estimated to be 35 years old, had succumbed to what appeared to be a lung infection.

Following the on-site examination, the veterinary team conducted a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Preliminary findings indicate the elephant suffered significantly from lung disease, which likely affected its other vital organs. Samples from the elephant's body have been collected for further analysis to ascertain if there were other contributing factors to the death. The results of these tests will provide more clarity on the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
