Women Stage Road Blockade in Dharapuram Demanding Drinking Water

In Dharapuram, women protested with empty pots on a highway demanding regular water supply, citing unfulfilled election promises from the local DMK councilor.

Tirupur: In a demonstration of frustration and desperation, several women in Dharapuram took to the streets with empty water pots to protest against the inadequate water supply in their locality. The protest occurred on the main highway in Dharapuram, disrupting the morning traffic.

The residents of Kulathu Punchai Street in Ward 13, governed by the Dharapuram Municipality, have been reportedly receiving only four pots of water per week. The demonstrators, predominantly women, expressed their betrayal, having trusted the election assurances made by the local DMK councilor, Srinivasan, who promised a regular and sufficient water supply.

According to the locals, the existing water infrastructure, including borewells and the shared Cauvery water scheme, fails to meet their daily requirements, leading to severe struggles in managing everyday tasks and affecting the routines of workers and students. The lack of action despite several complaints has fueled the anger among the residents leading to this protest.

Following the protest, discussions were conducted at the site with the municipal authorities and Councilor Srinivasan.

The residents highlighted ongoing issues like poorly constructed drainage systems and the inefficacy of borewells intended for saltwater conversion, further compounding their hardships.

Police at the scene intervened to facilitate dialogue between the protestors and local authorities, promising immediate action to resolve the water scarcity.

Inspector Ravi from the local police department assured that immediate measures will be taken to ensure a proper water supply, following which the women dispersed and ended the blockade.
