Magistrate suspended over controversial verdict in granite scam

Melur Judicial Magistrate K.V. Mahendra Boopathy has been served suspension orders for delivering a controversial verdict in favour of a businessman in the multi-crore granite scam case. This comes just a day after the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court recommended disciplinary action against him.

On Tuesday, Magistrate Boopathy acquitted PRP Granites Firm and another granite firm, against which there were serious indictments in the U. Sagayam, IAS, Panel report.

Not only that. He also went to the extent of ordering criminal action against senior bureaucrat Anshul Mishra and two Special Public prosecutors R. Sheela and K.C.A.D. Arunagiri on the alleged charges of suppressing crucial facts before the HC.

Following this, Justice P.N. Prakash of Madurai Bench of Madras HC recommended the Chief Justice to initiate "contempt of court proceedings or disciplinary action" against Mahendra Boopathy in the way he handled cases related to the granite scam.

Principal District Judge A.M. Basheer Ahamed and Chief Judicial Magistrate P. Saravanan, made a surprise visit, and held an inquiry in his chamber for about two hours.

It was learnt that the Judges after investigating him also collected crucial documents and submitted their report to Chief Justice S.K. Kaul, who took the final decision of suspending him from service.

Madras High Court Registrar General P. Kalaiyarasan served the suspension order and also directed the Principal District and Sessions Judge to replace Mahendra Boopathy with Judge Bharathiraja.
