Traders down shutters at Gudalur and Pandalur

Shop keepers in Gudalur and Pandalur downed shutters on Saturday urging the government to end the escalating man–animal conflict in Gudalur region.

Radhakrishnan, Manisekar, and Karnan, all plantation workers, were g trampled to death by wild elephants in the last one week.

The Peoples Welfare Front led by Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam staged a demonstration on Saturday. Public transport was not affected.

The DMK and the Congress too staged demonstrations near the Gudalur bus stand.

VCK functionaries said that 43 people have died in the last five years, and three persons have lost their lives in the last one week.

They said that the compensation amount to the kin of the deceased should be enhanced from the present Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh.

Forest Department has pressed three kumki elephants into service to track the movement of the wild elephant.

The department planned to capture the elephant. Conservator of Forests – Coimbatore Circle I. Anwardeen; Gudalur District Forest Officer S.N. Tejaswi; The Nilgiris District Collector P. Shankar; are camping in the area.

Forest officials have asked the people in the area to pluck out jack fruits from the trees, as elephants are easily lured by the fruit.
