In a statement following the election results, DMK president M. K. Stalin said that the party, which had functioned as a responsible ruling government, will now serve as a strong and constructive opposition, continuing to work for the welfare of the people.
Chennai:
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has suffered a major defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, while actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has secured a decisive number of seats. The scale of support garnered by the newly formed party has become a major talking point across the country.
Adding to the party’s disappointment, DMK president M. K. Stalin was defeated in the Kolathur Assembly constituency, a seat he had represented three times since 2011. He lost to V. S. Babu, the TVK candidate, who was reportedly once a close associate of the DMK president. Babu had served as the North Chennai district secretary of the DMK and was elected to the Assembly in 2006 from the Purasawalkam constituency.
Responding to the election outcome, DMK president M. K. Stalin stated:
“We humbly accept the people’s verdict. My heartfelt congratulations to those who have emerged victorious.
Over the past five years, we implemented numerous schemes and provided good governance to the people of Tamil Nadu. We worked towards the progress of the state across all sectors and sought votes based on our achievements.
Our campaign focused on continuing the welfare schemes we had introduced for the people.
I extend my sincere gratitude to all the people of Tamil Nadu who supported the secular and progressive alliance led by the DMK.
I governed not only for those who voted for us, but also for those who did not.
I have always remained truthful to the people and acted according to my conscience.
I worked beyond my limits, and I thank all my party colleagues and cadres—who are like family to me—for their tireless efforts.
I also express my gratitude to our alliance partners, administrators, and volunteers who stood with us throughout.
In my public life, I have witnessed both victories and defeats.
Therefore, I firmly believe that ideals and principles matter more than mere victories or losses.
The political journey of the DMK will continue without any obstacles.
Having served as a responsible ruling party, the DMK will now function as a strong opposition and continue to fight for the welfare of the people.”
Stalin reaffirmed that the party remains committed to its ideological path and public service as it transitions into the role of the opposition.
