An AIADMK councillor in Coimbatore has raised suspicions about a multi-crore rupee scam in the Vellalore dump yard fire incident. The councillor questioned the expenditure of over Rs 27 lakh on food and beverages during the 11-day firefighting operation.

Coimbatore: An AIADMK councillor in Coimbatore has alleged a multi-crore rupee scam in connection with the recent fire incident at the Vellalore dump yard. Speaking to reporters, the councillor expressed suspicion over the accounts presented for the firefighting operation, particularly the expenses incurred on food and beverages.

The fire at the Vellalore dump yard broke out on April 6, 2024, and took about 11 days to extinguish. According to the corporation's approval resolution, a total of Rs 27,51,678 was spent on food, tea, coffee, soft drinks, and fruits for the personnel involved in dousing the fire.

The issue came to light during the ordinary council meeting of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation held today at the corporation meeting hall.

In the absence of Mayor Kalpana Anandakumar, who has resigned, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Mayor Vetri Selvan. Out of the 333 resolutions tabled at the meeting, one pertained to the approval of expenses incurred during the Vellalore dump yard fire that raged from April 6 to April 17, 2024.

The total expenditure for extinguishing the fire was reported as Rs 76,70,318. However, the amount spent on food and beverages alone, which stands at Rs 27,51,678, has come under scrutiny and criticism.
