Worker arrested for assaulting wife near Irugur, Coimbatore

A 40-year-old daily wage worker was arrested in Irugur, Coimbatore, for physically assaulting his wife and injuring her with a sickle when she refused to give him money for alcohol on July 27.


Coimbatore: A daily wage worker was arrested for assaulting his wife near Irugur in Coimbatore on Thursday, July 27. The incident occurred when the man demanded money from his wife to purchase alcohol, which she refused.

Sambath Kumar (40), a resident of Marudachal Street in Irugur and a habitual drinker, asked his wife Rathina Priya (33) for money to buy alcohol. When she refused, Sambath Kumar became enraged and began verbally abusing her with inappropriate language.

The situation quickly escalated as Sambath Kumar physically assaulted Rathina Priya, beating and kicking her. He then attacked her with a sickle, causing injuries to her hand. Neighbors, hearing the commotion, intervened and rescued Rathina Priya. They immediately rushed her to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment.

Following a complaint about the incident, the Singanallur police arrested Sambath Kumar. He was subsequently produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.

This case highlights the ongoing issues of domestic violence and alcohol abuse, which continue to plague many households. Local authorities are urging citizens to report such incidents promptly to prevent escalation and ensure the safety of victims.
