Sadiq Basha, a 41-year-old theft case undertrial from Erode, died on July 28 at Coimbatore Government Hospital while undergoing treatment for liver issues and breathing difficulties.

Coimbatore: A 41-year-old undertrial prisoner from Coimbatore Central Prison died while undergoing treatment at Coimbatore Government Hospital on July 28. The deceased, identified as Sadiq Basha, was a resident of Tirunagar Colony in Erode district.

Sadiq Basha was arrested in connection with a theft case under the jurisdiction of Karungalpalayam Police Station in Erode district. He was subsequently lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison as an undertrial prisoner.

On June 24, Basha experienced a sudden deterioration in his health condition. He was initially treated at the medical facility within the Coimbatore Central Prison. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Coimbatore Government Hospital on July 5 for intensive care treatment.

Despite the medical efforts, Sadiq Basha succumbed to his illness on July 28. Sources indicate that he had been suffering from liver-related issues and experienced breathing difficulties, which ultimately led to his demise.

Following his death, a post-mortem examination was conducted, and the body was handed over to his wife. The Race Course Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the prisoner's death.

This incident has raised concerns about the health care facilities and monitoring of inmates' health conditions in prisons. Authorities are expected to review the medical protocols in place for prisoners to prevent such incidents in the future.
