Palakkad Railway Division Holds Press Meet on Unified Pension Scheme

Palakkad Railway Division's DRM conducted a press meet on August 27, 2024, to provide information on the newly announced Unified Pension Scheme for government employees, highlighting its benefits and impact on railway staff.


The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Palakkad, Arun Kumar Chaturvedi, held a press meet on August 27, 2024, at the DRM Office in Palakkad to provide detailed information on the recently announced Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) by the Union Cabinet. K. Harikrishnan, the Principal Chief Personnel Officer (PCPO) of Southern Railway, also addressed the media via video conferencing from Chennai, elaborating on the benefits of the scheme.

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the UPS, which aims to provide enhanced pension benefits for government employees. Key features of the scheme include an assured pension equivalent to 50% of the average basic pay over the last 12 months of service, provided a minimum of 25 years of service is completed, with proportional benefits for shorter tenures down to 10 years.

The scheme ensures an assured family pension at 60% of the employee's pension and a minimum pension of ₹10,000 per month for those with at least 10 years of service. Additionally, the pension benefits will be indexed to inflation, and employees will receive a lump sum payment upon retirement alongside their gratuity, ensuring financial security post-retirement.

In Palakkad Division, there are currently 6,882 serving employees, out of which 5,422 are under the National Pension System (NPS) and 1,460 are covered by the Old Pension Scheme. The large number of employees under NPS will be key beneficiaries of the UPS, ensuring better financial security after retirement.



The press meet was attended by S. Jayakrishnan, ADRM-1, K. Anil Kumar, ADRM-2, Sidharth K Varma, DPO, M. Vasudevan, DOM, and other officials.



This significant announcement marks a new chapter in the welfare of railway employees, and Palakkad Division remains committed to implementing these changes for the benefit of its workforce.
